OVERVIEW
The 8th Symposium will continue the examination of the potentials of emergent technologies that enhance the capabilities of the United States and its Allies in mining, mine countermeasures, and humanitarian demining including area remediation.
Special additional themes of the Eighth Symposium will be technologies in and for Expeditionary Warfare and Harbor Protection/Port Security, in addition to our continuing interest in Mine Warfare topics.
As with all previous symposia, the event will be jointly sponsored by several U.S. government agencies including the Program Executive Office for Littoral and Mine Warfare, and the Office of Naval Research. Line Navy sponsors include CNO N85, Commander Naval Mine and ASW Command, and Commander Naval Expeditionary Combat Command.
A primary objective in this Symposium Series is to provide an unclassified forum for interactions between and among the military user communities and the providers and developers of technology in industry, academe, and government laboratories.
The heart of the Symposium Series is the interaction it fosters among participants typically in the afternoon parallel sessions, on-site functions and the off-site reception hosted by MINWARA.
We’ll see you in MONTEREY!
SYMPOSIUM FORMAT
The symposium is held over a three-day period with morning sessions devoted to plenary talks and afternoon parallel sessions delving into the technical aspects of related research.
Talks will be given by senior government representatives that address operational requirements, technical challenges, and urgent needs for near term solutions and major system applications relating to symposia themes.
Plenary speakers will also include selected paper presentations of high technical merit and breadth of application.
Afternoon parallel sessions (nominally five or six sessions per day) are lead by chairs and co-chairs of sessions that delve into particular technical aspects of research areas related to the themes of the symposium.

MINWARA Reception
MINWARA will host a private Dessert Reception for symposium attendees
Wednesday, 7 May 08 at 7:30 pm at the
Monterey Bay Aquarium Outer Bay Wing
Dear Symposium Attendee;
The Mine Warfare Association (MINWARA) appreciates your continued support toward providing unclassified forums for interactions between and among the military user communities and the providers and developers of technology in industry, academe, and government laboratories.
I was elected to relieve Rear Admiral (ret) John Pearson at this year’s MINWARA annual meeting. As I look to the future, I am concerned by several developments and I hope to have the opportunity to address each over the next few years.
- The delay in the procurement of LCS and mine warfare mission modules. We need mine warfare capability, whether it’s hosted on MCMs, MHCs, LCS, amphibs or other ships of opportunity.
- The lack of US Navy interest (and investment) in mining. Some people seem to view mines as cheap weapons of no use in a high-tech Navy. Potential adversaries seem to think they’re going to be pretty useful.
- Mine warfare community leadership and growth. In the past skippers of mine ships, HM-14/15 and EOD officers who had tours in mine warfare returned to the community as squadron commanders and commodores. As we look to the future, the OIC of the LCS MCM detachment will be a Lieutenant. There won’t be dedicated HM squadrons when the MH-53s finally retire. How will mine warfare community leaders be trained, placed in positions of increased responsibility, and bring their expertise back to the community?
- Underwater IEDs. There have been several studies and wargames about the impact of underwater IED mining of a major US port. Our current equipment, tactics, techniques and procedures are intended for outside ports and harbors, not inside. Steps are being taken in this regard and we should support without discussing critical vulnerabilities in public.
The MINWARA Board of Directors and I plan to continue with a robust effort in informing appropriate individuals and organizations concerning ongoing and future activities to address these issues and improve mine warfare capabilities.
Rear Admiral (ret) John Pearson has agreed to continue his association with MINWARA as the new Executive Assistant. He will assist me and the DMC Companies in the overall management of MINWARA.
I hope to have the opportunity to meet you in May at the 8th Symposium <8thsymposium.com> and at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
We wish you great success your endeavors in 2008!
